Why Packaging is Important for Medicine

Packaging boxes are used all over the world for storing things etc. These packaging boxes are also used in pharmaceutical companies for medicine packing. Medicine packaging boxes are used for providing medical devices, life-saving drugs, and other medical nutrition to hospitals or in pharmacy. They may contain supplements of different types like solid, liquid, powder, drops etc.
Packaging is an emerging engineering discipline, an emerging science and a successful contributor to pharmaceutical companies. Medicine packaging boxes are used in every country because they keep products safe from moisture and damage during transportation.
Types of medicine packaging
Primary packaging: These are the first envelope packaging that touches with equipment or dosage form. They have direct contact with products. Like Blister packages, Strip packages etc.
Secondary packaging: These are consecutive covering or package that store pharmaceuticals package in it. Like Cartons, boxes etc.
Tertiary packaging: These are used for shipping pharmaceuticals or provide bulk handling from one place to another. Like barrels or containers etc.
Types of glasses used in pharmaceutical industry:
Borosilicate glass: These glasses are used to contain strong alkalis and acids.
Treated soda-lime glass: These prevent weathering/blooming from bottles. These glasses are more chemically inert than borosilicate glass.
General purpose soda lime glass: These glasses are used for orally or topically products.
Regular soda lime glass: These glasses have average chemical resistance with untreated soda lime glass.
Functions of medicine packaging boxes:
  • It protects the product from all external influences which will affect its potency and quality such as moisture, oxygen, light, mechanical damage, counterfeiting and biological contamination.
  • For packaging medicine products the most fundamental function is the containment. This requires packaging to be strong enough so it can hold contents, it should not leak.
  • The printed pack provides information and identity of the medicine. So, there will be no confusion.
  • Labels on packaging provide products information for patients.
  • Medicine packaging boxes are convenient because they tell us how to use the products.

Plastic containers for packaging:
Polyethylene packaging: These kinds of medicine packaging boxes give you the benefit of a good barrier that protects against moisture but comparatively poor against other gases for example Oxygen.
Polystyrene: These are crystal clear and rigid plastic and are not used for liquid products. They are easily breakable or stretchable.
Nylon: These are quietly strong and difficult to destroy. It provides a wide range of resistance to acids and alkali. It cannot be used for the products that will be stored for long term.
Polyethylene terephthalate: They provide a barrier for gas because of its excellent strength. Its aroma makes it useful for packaging mouthwashes, cosmetics, and other products.
Things that are stored in medicine packaging boxes are:
  • Blister packs
  • Caps and Closures
  • Plastic bottles
  • Medical specialty bags
  • Labels and Accessories
  • Ampoules
  • Pre fillable inhalers
  • Temperature controlled vaccines
  • Pre fillable syringes
  • Pouches and Strip packs
  • Vials
  • Cartridges
  • Mini jars
  • Canisters
  • Medication tubes

Medicine packaging boxes protect these products from biological contamination, physical damage and keep medicines or equipment’s safe from external influences which can damage products properties. These packages save medicine from bacterial influences.
